UK immigration applications come with two main types of cost: the visa fee itself and the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS), which gives you access to the NHS. There are also smaller costs that often catch applicants off-guard.
The Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS)
The IHS is paid for the full length of your visa, in advance. As of 2026 the standard rates are:
| Applicant type | IHS per year |
|---|---|
| Students and their dependants | £776 |
| Most other adult applicants | £1,035 |
| Children under 18 | £776 |
So a three-year Skilled Worker visa attracts an IHS of £3,105 per adult, paid up front.
Visa Application Fees (Indicative)
| Visa | Applied from outside UK | Applied from inside UK |
|---|---|---|
| Student | £524 | £624 |
| Skilled Worker (up to 3 years) | £769 | £885 |
| Spouse / Partner | £1,938 | £1,048 |
| Indefinite Leave to Remain | — | £3,029 |
Figures are indicative and rounded for clarity. Always confirm the latest published rates before applying.
Priority and Super Priority Services
If you need a faster decision, you can pay extra:
- Priority service: usually around £500, decision within five working days.
- Super priority service: usually around £1,000, decision by the end of the next working day.
Can You Get a Refund?
You can claim a refund of the IHS if your visa is refused, if you withdraw your application, or if you leave the UK before the end of your visa under certain circumstances. Visa application fees are typically non-refundable.
"Budget for the full IHS up front — it's the single biggest surprise for most first-time applicants."
