UK immigration applications come with two main types of cost: the visa fee itself and the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS), which gives you access to the NHS. There are also smaller costs that often catch applicants off-guard.

The Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS)

The IHS is paid for the full length of your visa, in advance. As of 2026 the standard rates are:

Applicant typeIHS per year
Students and their dependants£776
Most other adult applicants£1,035
Children under 18£776

So a three-year Skilled Worker visa attracts an IHS of £3,105 per adult, paid up front.

Visa Application Fees (Indicative)

Student£524£624
Skilled Worker (up to 3 years)£769£885

Figures are indicative and rounded for clarity. Always confirm the latest published rates before applying.

Don't forget: Biometric enrolment, courier fees, document translation, English test fees, and TB tests are not included above and can add several hundred pounds.

Can You Get a Refund?

You can claim a refund of the IHS if your visa is refused, if you withdraw your application, or if you leave the UK before the end of your visa under certain circumstances. Visa application fees are typically non-refundable.

"Budget for the full IHS up front — it's the single biggest surprise for most first-time applicants."
